The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
